We mentioned it briefly in our last post (phew, its been a while!) that we were gearing up to have a honeymoon songwriting retreat this last 4th of July weekend. We did, and it. went. great!

After we played the after party for Jackie Greene’s Henry Miller show at Fernwood, we holed up in a yurt for 4 days – honeymoon style! We ate at fabulous restaurants in Big Sur, lounged by the river in the day and wrote songs on the porch most every night. It was a truly wonderful and relaxing weekend that we all needed!

Over the course of our existence as a band, we have had the extreme honor and privilege of opening the stage for Mr. Jackie Greene- an amazing songwriter and musician. Actually, our first show ever was opening for Jackie in Petaluma, and we spent a few weeks supporting one of his California tours at the beginning of 2011. Jackie even sat in on our rendition of “I Know Your Rider” by the Grateful Dead at one of our last shows!

Originally from Monterey County, now with a home base in Sacramento, Jackie recently released a collection of his recordings and lyrics from the last 10 years. If you don’t already know about Jackie, this collection is an amazing way to catch up. Learn more and order HERE

He will be playing an acoustic solo show at Henry Miller Library in Big Sur on Saturday July 2!! After the show is over, we invite you to come out to Fernwood Resort for a honeymoon after-party! We’ll be playing a full band set in the tavern, and would love to see you all there! Come kick off the 4th of July weekend with us!

The release of Lauren Shera’s “Once I Was A Bird”

The first time the ladies of honeymoon got together, Lauren was just about a year out of finishing her second studio album “Once I Was A Bird”. On first listen, we all knew it was a true gem of a record. An eloquent statement by Lauren and a sonic triumph by recording engineer Andy Zenczak of Gadgetbox Studios.We’ve been lucky to play versions of Lauren’s songs at honeymoon live shows over the last year, and now it’s time for our lovely Lauren to release the album to the rest of the world! Once I Was A Bird is now available to the public and it’s already receiving critical acclaim by indie folk blogs and magazines like American Songwriter!

We brunch. We admit it. We even made a video about it.But what was interesting about brunch this last time Christina and Andrea had brunch together, was that Andrea mentioned she had seen a tiny pony in the parking lot before they met.

Of course, Christina didn’t quiite believe her, and not sure Andrea quitte believed it either, but nonetheless…it was there, and apparently needed a new macbook.

Ok, so Andrea didn’t actually take this particular picture, but this one went viral and she saw it the same day as the pony in the parking lot…coincidence, I think not.

The California Presenters organization houses a majority of the performing arts centers in California. Cross your fingers we do well

It goes without saying that touring is great. It gives us a chance to get out of our routines and experience multitudes of different cities and cultures. Out of all the bonding activities bands can do on the road, one of our favorite things to do is hunt for vintage stores. Down south, it’s the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena. in SF,Wasteland on Upper Haight is a veritable treasure chest.

We hear the term “vintage” thrown around a lot these days. From vintage cars to vintage cooking utensils,it seems that everything in
existence in the modern market has some kind of aged counterpart. The trouble with these aging pieces is deciphering whether it’s vintage, or simply old. Textbook vintage is supposed to be “of old, recognized, and enduring interest, importance, or quality.” True “vintage” items have inherent value. That’s why it’s often confusing to go to a trendy new store and see a “vintage” section of dresses made from cheap synthetic fabrics. Thanks to my sister-in-law Clyde Blunt, I’ve picked up a few key shopping pointers and I’d like to share them with you.

1. Know your brands. When digging through piles of old garments at flea markets or thrift stores, it’s important to know what you’re looking for. Many sellers don’t realize they have a pair of Ferragamos in their pile of shoes or a vintage Coach bag in their bin of purses.

Just to name a few…

2. Quality. A true vintage item will be made out of the best and most durable materials. If the leather is still in pristine condition after 30 years, chances are it’s going to last for another 30 (with proper tlc, of course).

3. Vision. It’s important to know what looks good on your body. Keep your eyes peeled for a flattering bodice or an interesting pattern. The skirt length is always secondary–I get the majority of my found dresses hemmed. The majority of vintage skirts come to an awkward length at the shins. To modernize them, I take them up as far as I can while keeping the proportions of the dress in tact.

Wanna know how to make honeymoon happy?

Feed us casserole.

No seriously, the fine people at The West Side Theater in Newman, CA greeted us after sound check with a home cooked casserole on Saturday night, and we. were. sold. Our new favorite venue in Central California!

We had a lovely evening singing our harmonies into the extremely high ceiling at West Side, and then hugging all the fine Newman locals after our 70 minute set. THANK YOU to all the staff at the Theater, and to all our friends that came out to support us.

Ok, So I have to tell you the story behind this next one. I (christina) had a big commitment on Saturday morning before our Newman show, so the girls were super sweet and sound checked my guitar and mic while I was hauling tail from Monterey to Newman just in time for our set. I found out later, while I was gone, they found my replacement…

After playing with mannequins, eating casserole and pretty much being treated like queens at The West Side Theater on Saturday, we closed up the weekend at a wonderful UC Santa Cruz event – Rock N Roll on the Knoll – on Sunday. honeymoon friend and UCSC student, Ira, hooked us up with the show, and BOY did we have a blast. We folk-rocked it up, drank cheap beer on the sly, ate hamburgers sans plates and sang over a sunset with our backs to the Pacific ocean. It was a really lovely way to end the weekend.

Cellar Door & NEW LA show !

This weekend was already set to be a fabulous one with our next show date putting us at The Cellar Door in Visalia,CA this Friday night- the hometown of both Sara and Christina. We’ll be playing with He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister (video below)!

To spread the word about the show, we’ll be featured on Evening Eclectic on KFSR Thursday evening at 7pm via a phone interview with Christina. Big Thank You To Jefferson Beavers for the interview and support! Be sure to check it out on the airwaves, or streaming live online Thursday night.
